Chollas Creek Coalition

In partnership with the Chollas Creek Coalition, Pueblo Planning developed a set of community engagement principles and practices that were to be used to advocate for more democratic planning processes in the City of San Diego. Part of this process was to start the conversation with the City of San Diego to improve City-led efforts of community engagement by clearly stating principles and practices for meaningful community engagement at all stages of the public participation cycle (Pre-community engagement, during community engagement, post-community engagement, and ongoing efforts). The intention of these principles and practices was to serve as a guide for community engagement practices and principles for the City of San Diego, along with their hired consultants, to implement and improve community engagement efforts. The Cholla Creek Coalition Public Participation Practices and Principles emphasize the need for community voices to be heard, for relationships and trust to be developed between the City and community members, and the overall need for planning efforts to be co-developed with community members as they are the experts within their communities. These practices and principles aim to shift the lens of planning and put an end to extractive planning practices. These practices and principles also serve as a foundation for Pueblo Planning’s work.
